Ai-Da, the world’s first ultra-realistic robot artist, can draw, paint, perform as a performer, and engage in vigorous debate. Ai-Da, named after Ada Lovelace, a pioneering female scientist and mathematician, is a composite persona made up of a variety of computer programmes, robotics, silicone, and human influences as an AI machine. Aidan Meller, the gallery’s director, built her with a lifelike silicone face created by researcher Lucy Seal, digital artist Alex Kafoussias, and 3D designer Tim Milward to make her look alive with expression, passion, and even creativity. Meanwhile, Salah al-Abd and Ziad Abass of the University of Leeds School of Electronic and Electrical Engineering have constructed a robotic arm that allows her to handle a pencil. The team employed clever algorithms to analyse who Ai-Da saw using computer vision, and then created a control system that generated a path for her arm to follow based on her interpretation.
